Nervous About Starting Therapy?
Why “Just Do It” (thank you Nike) Is the Best Advice
Miriam Adler, PhD
You know that feeling in your stomach—the twisty, nervous flutter—when you think about reaching out for therapy? Maybe you’ve stared at the phone, rehearsed what you’d say, or hovered over the “reach out here” button for days. Maybe you’ve never been to counseling before, or maybe our have btdt and this is “starting over”. If getting started feels overwhelming, you’re definitely not alone. Most people have some degree of anxiety about reaching out. It can feel a little like standing at the edge of a pool, unsure if you want to jump in or just watch.
It’s Normal to Feel Anxious About Contacting a Therapist
Let’s be real: beginning therapy can feel intimidating. There’s the fear of the unknown, worries about judgment, and uncertainty about what will happen in the first session. You might wonder, “Will I say the right thing? Will the therapist understand me? Are my challenges too much—or not enough—for therapy?”
Guess what? These fears are universal. Most people feel some hesitation before their first session. Even therapists admit to feeling nervous when they started their own therapy journeys. Anxiety about starting is a sign you care about your wellbeing. It means you’re invested in making a change.
Why Nike’s “Just Do It” Is the Right Approach
Here’s where Nike’s iconic “Just Do It” comes in. The message isn’t about ignoring your fears—it’s about acknowledging them, then taking action anyway. When it comes to therapy, waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect mood rarely works. The truth is, you don’t need to have all the answers or feel completely ready. You just need to take the first step.
Think of “Just Do It” as permission to be imperfect, anxious, and unsure—while still moving forward. The act of scheduling that appointment, making the call, or sending the email is itself a powerful statement: “I’m prioritizing myself, even if I’m scared.” Deep down I know “I want to move in the right direction, even if I have to make myself do it.”
